This collection originates from a short period of time in April 2016. We were still living in Brooklyn. Andy had been traveling to Athens, Greece for work occasionally in those years, and this was to be their last trip before we welcomed a child into our family. Their final trip for that project occurred in November/December 2016, during which I was creating the material which became A Changed Meaning. Writing about this now, it feels as if a handful of lifetimes have passed.

Like that only slighter later collection, andy in athens grows from slow meshes of electronic sound and acoustic recordings, another step on the path from park and false heat. Revising this work in the spring of 2023, I can hear how I relate to movements between the briefly solitary space of our apartment in Brooklyn and the psychogeography of life navigating New York City. Looking at the photographs from the spring of 2016 included here, I see and hear through myself, now, to the connection I had to our place(s), then.

This is the first really “unreleased/archival” work I’ve published online since park. While I rarely publish work when it is “just made” - this has been a long period of reflection, and some inevitability going in to what is heard on Andy In Athens. In a few ways this is more bare than my original edits, reduced in places by material density and additional treatments. Part of my desire to make these pieces public is “wow that feels like lifetimes ago,” but also a fondness found in how clearly I see where I was, a place no less full of potential language and experience, still available for listeners to move through, and find their own reflections.
