about

My language for creative practice meets accessible descriptions of media and genre in a very messy place, and burdened by a weight of abstraction, comes home tired. A listener comes here with ears and eyes and experience that is not my own, to participate in listening, to share some time with creative work that is not didactic or literal or providing a kind of immediate language or structure to navigate this time.

The material included here, music and photography, was produced in the summer of 2021. “Is this what I am saying or showing?” will take me months to resolve, at the minimum. My thinking and language for my music slowly changes but remains anchored to ideas and expressions that I think by 2023 are salient to a listener.

What has grown for me is a sense of my work as moving between interior and exterior spaces. I mean this in two ways. The instruments and material I work with, my practice and habits, come from interior sources and spaces - such as instruments recorded inside our apartment - and recordings and personal practices that are engaged with exterior spaces, in the city and as far out as we can go.

Here my practice involved exciting a polyphonic digital resonator with microphones open to our home, windows open or closed, and further play occurs in treating that signal with a synthesizer. The exterior comes in, and in listening that process turns around and comes back out.

There is not much complexity, but I try to hold space for a poetry of our inner lives.

Following this idea, my work expresses two interiors: my own inner language that brings me to the work, and that of the listener, and these come to meet in the exterior event of listening. The language a listener has for my work is not my own, my intention is for my work to provide a space for that inner poetry to find itself in.

That’s all really. Fidelity (or “sound quality”), genre, milieu, site of presentation or object of encounter are not great concerns of mine right now. The language I have come to for this is informal music. I feel this reflects both where I have been, where I would like to go, and some of the character of our meeting there. The rest I cannot, and do not wish, to formalize. I want us to meet.
